Signs of Previous Chassis Repair Found During Pre-Purchase Inspection

During a recent pre-purchase inspection, our mechanic identified signs of previous repair work at the vehicle’s chassis area.

Further inspection also revealed a broken mounting ledge within the engine bay area.

These findings were not immediately obvious from a normal exterior viewing of the vehicle and were documented as part of our accident and chassis inspection.

Signs of Previous Repair Work

During the engine bay and chassis inspection, our mechanic noticed differences in the surface finish and visible signs of previous work at the chassis area compared with the surrounding areas.

This prompted a closer inspection of the affected and surrounding structural areas.

Based on the physical observations during the inspection, the finding was documented as signs of previous repair work at the chassis area.

Broken Mounting Ledge Observed

Further inspection identified a broken mounting ledge within the engine bay area.

The damaged mounting area was documented together with the other chassis findings observed during the inspection.

When findings such as these are identified, it is important to consider them together with the condition of the surrounding areas rather than relying on a single observation to determine the vehicle’s repair history.

Why These Findings Matter

Signs of previous chassis repair can provide useful information about a used vehicle’s history.

However, evidence of previous repair work does not by itself establish the cause or severity of any previous damage. The location, extent and quality of the repair, together with the condition of surrounding structural areas, should be considered when assessing the vehicle.

This is why accident and chassis checks form part of our pre-purchase inspection checklist, where accessible structural areas are visually inspected for signs of previous repairs or accident-related work.

What We Look for During Chassis Inspection

During a pre-purchase inspection, accessible chassis and structural areas are visually checked for signs that may indicate previous repair work, including:

  • Differences in paint or surface finish
  • Signs of previous welding or repair work
  • Unusual sealant or finishing
  • Visible repair or deformation marks
  • Damaged mounting points or surrounding structures
  • Differences between corresponding structural areas
  • Signs of previous component removal or replacement

Individual observations are considered together with the other findings from the vehicle inspection.

Findings Documented in the Inspection Report

The chassis repair signs and broken mounting ledge observed in this case were documented as part of the vehicle’s overall inspection findings.

Our inspection report records observations from the different areas inspected, allowing the customer to have a clearer understanding of the vehicle’s observed condition before making their own purchase decision.
