Suspension Wear Found During a Used Car Inspection
Not every issue found during a pre-purchase inspection is a major fault. Sometimes, the inspection simply identifies wear-and-tear items that may need attention as the car continues to age.
During a recent pre-purchase inspection in Singapore, our undercarriage inspection identified two areas of suspension wear: deteriorated shock absorber rubber components and play in a stabiliser link.
These are the types of components that may not be immediately noticeable during a short viewing of a used car.
This is one of the actual vehicles featured in our Real Inspection Cases, where we share selected findings observed during pre-purchase inspections.
What We Found During the Inspection
As part of the undercarriage inspection, the vehicle was raised so that the suspension, steering and surrounding components could be visually and manually checked.
Two findings were noted.
1. Deteriorated Shock Absorber Rubber Components
During the suspension inspection, deterioration and cracking were observed on the rubber components around the shock absorber.
Rubber suspension components are exposed to movement, heat, road conditions and ageing throughout the life of a vehicle. Over time, the material can harden, crack or deteriorate.
The condition was documented in the inspection report so that the customer was aware of the wear and could take it into consideration when planning future maintenance.
2. Stabiliser Link Found With Play
The stabiliser link was also manually checked during the undercarriage inspection and was found to have noticeable play.
Stabiliser links form part of the vehicle’s suspension system. As the joints wear over time, excessive play can develop.
Depending on the extent of wear, a worn stabiliser link may sometimes contribute to knocking or rattling noises when travelling over uneven roads or bumps.
Again, this does not automatically mean that there is a major problem with the vehicle. It is a wear-and-tear condition that should be highlighted so the buyer understands the current condition of the suspension.
Why These Findings Matter When Buying a Used Car
Used cars will naturally have some degree of wear depending on their age, mileage, usage and maintenance history.
The purpose of identifying these items during a pre-purchase inspection is not simply to label a car as “good” or “bad”.
Instead, the findings provide the buyer with more information about the vehicle’s condition at the time of inspection.
In this case, the suspension findings were documented so the customer could understand which components were showing signs of wear and what may require attention moving forward.
Some Suspension Wear May Not Trigger a Warning Light
Mechanical wear in components such as stabiliser links, bushes and other suspension parts will not necessarily trigger a dashboard warning light or generate an electronic fault code.

During our pre-purchase inspection, the undercarriage is visually inspected and relevant suspension and steering components are manually checked where accessible.
The Findings Were Included in the Inspection Report
Both suspension findings were photographed and recorded as part of the vehicle’s inspection report.
This allows the customer to refer back to the findings after the inspection and better understand what maintenance may be required in the future.
Every used car is different. Some findings may require more immediate attention, while others may simply be items to monitor or plan for as part of normal vehicle ownership.
Our role during the inspection is to identify and document what we observe as fairly and objectively as possible, so the customer has a clearer picture of the vehicle’s condition.
